The Vancouver Police Historical Society, a non-profit organisation founded in 1983 with the mission to promote interest in the history of the Vancouver Police Department and to open a museum for this purpose, operates the museum, which is situated in the centre of Old Vancouver, between the Chinatown and Gastown districts. The original morgue and autopsy room are among the permanent displays at the museum, which is housed on the top floor of the city-owned Coroner's Court building. About 30,000 items are currently in the museum's collection. Sure, here are some more details about the Vancouver Police Museum:

History: The Vancouver Police Museum was founded in 1986 by Joe Swan, a retired Vancouver police officer who wanted to preserve the history and heritage of the Vancouver Police Department. The museum initially operated out of a small space in police headquarters, but in 1994 it moved to its current location in the city's historic Gastown neighborhood.

Exhibits: The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of topics related to police history and law enforcement. Some additional details about the exhibits include:

  • The Vancouver Police Motorcycle Squad: This exhibit features a collection of vintage police motorcycles, including a 1942 Indian Chief and a 1956 Harley Davidson, that were used by the Vancouver Police Department over the years.
  • The Photo Gallery: The Photo Gallery features a collection of historic photographs that document the history of the Vancouver Police Department and the city's law enforcement activities. The photographs include images of early police officers, crime scenes, and police activities.
  • The Old Jail: Visitors can explore a replica of the old city jail, which was in use from 1932 to 1980. The jail features original cells and other fixtures, and visitors can learn about the history of policing and the justice system in Vancouver.
  • The Forensics Exhibit: This exhibit explores the history and methods of forensic science, and features artifacts such as fingerprint kits, blood testing equipment, and evidence collection tools.

Events and Programs: The Vancouver Police Museum hosts a variety of events and programs throughout the year. Some of the museum's regular programming includes:

  • Guided tours of the museum and the city's police heritage sites
  • Workshops and talks on a variety of police-related topics, such as forensics, police training, and law enforcement history
  • Family-friendly events and activities, such as scavenger hunts, police-themed games, and crime-solving workshops

The museum also partners with other cultural institutions and organizations in the city to offer collaborative programming, such as film screenings and speaker series.

Location and Hours: The Vancouver Police Museum is located at 240 E. Cordova St, Vancouver, BC V6A 1L3, Canada, in the city's historic Gastown neighborhood. The museum is easily accessible by public transit and car, with street parking available nearby. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am-5pm, except for holidays.
