 Vancouver Maritime Museum

A wonderful, family-friendly location to discover and learn about the sea and the ships that sail it is the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

Sure, here are some more details about the Vancouver Maritime Museum:

History: The Vancouver Maritime Museum was founded in 1959 by a group of maritime enthusiasts who wanted to preserve and showcase the city's maritime heritage. The museum initially operated out of a small space in downtown Vancouver, but in 1960 it moved to its current location in Vanier Park, where it has continued to grow and expand its collection.

Exhibits: The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of topics related to maritime history and culture. Some additional details about the exhibits include:

  • The St. Roch: The St. Roch is a historic ship that was built in 1928 and used for Arctic exploration. It was the first ship to complete the Northwest Passage from west to east, and the first to navigate the passage in a single season. The ship is now on display at the museum, and visitors can explore its cabins, engine room, and other areas.
  • The Children's Maritime Discovery Centre: The Children's Maritime Discovery Centre is a hands-on exhibit designed for children and families. It features interactive displays and activities that teach visitors about maritime history, science, and technology. Some of the exhibits include a water table, a knot-tying station, and a miniature boat-building workshop.
  • The Model Gallery: The Model Gallery features a collection of over 100 model ships and boats, ranging from small sailboats to large steamships. Many of the models are over 100 years old, and some are intricate and detailed replicas of historic vessels.
  • The West Coast and Arctic Indigenous Collection: The West Coast and Arctic Indigenous Collection explores the maritime traditions and culture of Indigenous communities from the Pacific Northwest and the Arctic. The exhibit features artifacts, photographs, and artwork that illustrate the connection between Indigenous peoples and the ocean.

Events and Programs: The Vancouver Maritime Museum hosts a variety of events and programs throughout the year. Some of the museum's regular programming includes:

  • Guided tours of the St. Roch and the museum's other exhibits
  • Workshops and talks on a variety of maritime-related topics, such as boat building, navigation, and ocean conservation
  • Family-friendly events and activities, such as scavenger hunts, craft workshops, and storytelling sessions

The museum also partners with other cultural institutions and organizations in the city to offer collaborative programming, such as film screenings and speaker series.

Location and Hours: The Vancouver Maritime Museum is located at 1905 Ogden Ave, Vancouver, BC V6J 1A3, Canada, in Vanier Park. The museum is easily accessible by public transit and car, with parking available on-site for a fee. The museum is open daily from 10am-5pm, except for holidays. Virtual Tour: Vancouver Maritime Museum

Vancouver Maritime Museum is a shipbuilding and marine museum that specialises in showcasing the maritime heritage of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and the Canadian Arctic. It is situated in Vanier Park, on the Vancouver waterfront, just west of False Creek, and was inaugurated in 1959 as a Vancouver centennial project. Affiliations between the museum and CMA, CHIN, and the Virtual Museum of Canada exist.

St. Roch, a vintage arctic expedition ship utilized by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, serves as the centrepiece of the show. The museum also features extensive galleries of model ships, a Children's Maritime Discovery Center, a replica of the forecastle of Vancouver's ship Discovery, an extensive collection of maritime art, a large library, and archives, as well as one with historical model ships made entirely of cardboard or paper and another with a particularly fine-boned model of the French warship Vengeur du Peuple that was built around 1800 by French prisoners of war.
