Virtual Tour: VanDusen Botanical Garden

The Shaughnessy district of Vancouver, British Columbia, is home to the VanDusen Botanical Garden. It is situated on the northwest corner of Oak Street and 37th Avenue. It bears Whitford Julian VanDusen's name, a local lumberman and philanthropist.

A contract to support the creation of a public garden on a portion of the former Shaughnessy Golf Course was signed in 1970 by the Vancouver Foundation, the provincial government of British Columbia, and the city of Vancouver. On August 30, 1975, the Botanical Garden officially opened to the public. It is still co-managed by the Vancouver Park Board and the Vancouver Botanical Gardens Association (VBGA), much like the nearby Bloedel Conservatory.

The Garden is 22 hectares large (55 acres). There is a sizable collection of indigenous British Columbia (Northwest Coast) flora in addition to displays of plants from all around the world. In order to reintroduce native plants into Vancouver's regional parks, a recently created "re-wilding" outreach campaign attempts to rescue and propagate them.

The garden's unique features, in addition to the water features scattered around the undulating landscape, are carved totem poles, a small Japanese garden, and substantial stone sculptures. In the vicinity of the heritage vegetable garden at VanDusen, kids enjoy the maze.

The garden's mission statement affirms the goals of a botanical garden, but an early choice not to engage in scientific research diverted resources towards garden development and relieved the staff of the duty of creating research collections or a herbarium. The VBGA engages in citizen science programmes and collaborates with neighbourhood organisations and schools that are interested in conducting fieldwork.

Nearly 1,000 different types of rhodos are said to be in the collection. Some plants bloom almost constantly, with species rhodos in the Sino Himalayan garden experiencing tremendous blooms in the final several weeks of winter. Fagus sylvatica varieties, as well as collections of Sorbus, Fraxinus, and Magnolia, are also noteworthy.
  • A large sino-Himalayan garden that spans about eight acres by itself is one of the specialised niche plantings. Other specialised niche plantings include a Heather garden, a "black" garden, a seasonal "Laburnum Walk", a majestic stand of Sequoiadendron giganteum, a cypress pond, a formal perennial garden, a heritage vegetable garden (seasonal), a fragrance garden (seasonal), and so on.
