A large chunk of the area is wilderness, and the Trans-Canada Highway between Revelstoke and Golden is devoid of facilities. Avalanches are brought down before they become a threat by Park Canada experts who monitor the slopes and, when necessary, seal the Highway and call in the Canadian Armed Forces, who bring down avalanches before they become a problem. Mount Revelstoke National Park is the smallest national park in the region, having been established in 1914 to protect the Clachnacudainn Range of the Columbia Mountains. The Trans-Canada Highway runs approximately 13 kilometres (8 miles) along the park's southern perimeter, providing spectacular vistas of woods and snow-capped peaks."

The railway of Field
Although regular passenger trains no longer operate through Field, the railway is one of the first things you see when you arrive. The railway was intended to connect the land and encourage settlement as much as it was a transit utility. A northerly route would have bypassed vast swaths of valuable prairie near the US border (around Calgary), allowing the US to take control of most of the region and its resources. As a result, the railway was persuaded to use the Kicking Horse route, despite all engineering advice, and was forced to tackle four-percent slopes, the highest of any commercial railway at the time. The famous Spiral was born as a result.

Yoho National Park's name comes from a Cree term that means "wonder" - a fitting tribute to the park's majestic mountains, lakes, and waterfalls.
The park visitor centre and limited lodging are located in Field, the lone settlement. More lodging is provided at the park's trail hubs, which include Lake O'Hara, the Yoho Valley, and Emerald Lake, as well as the park's main focal areas. If you’re really short on time, get a quick taste of the park on the side roads to Emerald Lake and the Yoho Valley.
Emerald Lake and Yoho Valley are located north of the Trans-Canada Highway and are easily accessible for a day trip. The Emerald Lake Road leaves the roadway west of Field and[...], which has remained almost unchanged since its 1884 beginnings as a railroad construction camp. The Burgess Shale, a remarkable geological deposit on the upper slopes of Mount Field with fossils from the Middle Cambrian period (515–530 million years ago), and the Spiral Tunnels are two neighbouring attractions, but Field is mostly a hiking base. The Lake O'Hara! region is located in the southeast corner of the state. The Lake O'Hara! area, located in the park's southeastern section, is one of the Rockies' best all-around enclaves, boasting breathtaking scenery, multiple lakes, and a vast array of alpine and subalpine terrain. It's an excellent hiking base: you could easily spend a week or more exploring the paths that branch off from the central lodge and campground. Lake O'Hara is framed by two of the peaks that also overlook Lake Louise across the ridge - Mounts Lefroy (3429m) and Victoria (3429m) (3464m).
