Alder Grove Heritage Society

Certainly! The Alder Grove Heritage Society is dedicated to preserving the history of Alder Grove, a community in Langley, British Columbia that dates back to the late 1800s. The society's museum, the Alder Grove Heritage House, is a restored farmhouse that was built in 1912 and served as a family home until the 1970s.

The museum's exhibits cover a wide range of topics related to the history of Alder Grove and the surrounding area. One of the museum's main focuses is on local industries such as logging, farming, and fishing, which were all vital to the community's development. Visitors can see artifacts, photographs, and other items related to these industries, and learn about the people who worked in them.

The museum also has exhibits on the history of transportation in the area, including the role of the CN Station, which served as a transportation hub for the community from 1909 until the 1950s. The society has been working to restore the station, which is located adjacent to the museum, and hopes to turn it into a community center and museum in the future.

In addition to its museum, the Alder Grove Heritage Society sponsors a variety of events and activities throughout the year. These include walking tours of historic sites in the community, historical talks and presentations, and community festivals.

The society is also involved in a number of preservation efforts aimed at protecting historic sites and buildings in Alder Grove. These include efforts to preserve the CN Station and other historic structures, as well as ongoing research and documentation of the area's history.

Overall, the Alder Grove Heritage Society is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Alder Grove and the surrounding area. Its museum, events, and preservation efforts all serve to promote and preserve the rich heritage of this community.

Virtual Tour: Alder Grove Heritage Society

The Langmann family generously provided some 50,000 photos and negatives that span several years of news photography. The process of scanning and sharing these images is currently underway. A significant number of Aldergrove newspaper back issues were also provided by the family, and the society now has a nearly full collection of news from the past 70 years.

Numerous collections are held by the Alder Grove Heritage Society. Although many refer to them as "the telephone museum," they actually cover a lot more ground. The society is currently going through a bit of a metamorphosis. Finding, cataloguing, tracking, photographing, digitising, and inventorying all of the objects, documents, photos, books, maps, and other holdings in the building is a time-consuming process that has been made more difficult by the current state of the society's health and the small building's cramped quarters. It is incredible how much information is kept in the museum; it seems like every time we visit, we discover something new in a location where we didn't anticipate finding anything.

Things To See

The Langmann Family – Aldergrove Star Collection

About 50,000 images and negatives from several years' worth of news photography were kindly donated by the Langmann family. These images are currently being digitised and prepared for sharing. The family also contributed a large number of Aldergrove newspaper back issues, and the society now has a nearly full collection of news from the past 70 years.

Vintage Telephone Directories

This collection has been pulled out of the shadows of our crawlspace, catalogued, photographed, and is currently being indexed and linked with museum data. The index will be released once this process is finished. Since many of the older directories are extremely vulnerable, the general public won't have access to them.

Women’s Institute Records

School records and images are available at the organisation, many of which are from Aldergrove Elementary School and County Line School.

Business Memorabilia

They have several invoices, sales slips, inventory lists, land documents, promotional calendars and giveaways, and more from numerous local businesses, many of which are no longer in operation.
