The Father Bauer Arena, a classic ice hockey venue that first opened its doors in October 1963, served as the facility's inspiration. This honours the late Father David Bauer, who founded Canada's first national hockey team at UBC in 1963 in anticipation of the 1964 Winter Olympics alongside Bob Hindmarch. The Father Bauer Arena was replaced by the UBC Thunderbird Arena as the ice hockey team's home. The Vancouver Canucks, an NHL team from Vancouver, also use it as a practise space.

For concerts, the main ice rink's 7,500 seats may be expanded to 8,000. Father Bauer Arena and Protrans Arena, with respective seating capacities of 980 and 200, are the other rinks.

The Father Bauer Arena renovation and the building of a new practise arena started the construction process in April 2006. On July 7, 2008, the brand-new stadium arena was inaugurated. In honour of Doug Mitchell, a UBC alumnus, lawyer, and influential figure in both amateur and professional sports, the Thunderbird Sports Centre was renamed the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on August 21, 2009.
