General Motors Place (GM Place) was the name of the arena when it first opened in 1995. However, on July 6, 2010, General Motors Canada discontinued its sponsorship of the naming rights, and a new arrangement for those rights was made with Rogers Communications. Because Vancouver and Toronto received expansion clubs for the National Basketball Association (NBA1995 )'s expansion into Canada, Rogers Arena was constructed to take the role of Pacific Coliseum as Vancouver's main indoor sports arena.
