India visa questions, answered plainly
India visa questions, answered plainly
A quick, practical pass through the most common route questions before you book.
Is the India eVisa fully online?
Yes. Eligible travellers apply online, upload the required files, pay online, and wait for ETA before travel.
Should I book flights before ETA is confirmed?
It is safer to keep flexible plans until the route, documents, and timing are clear.
What should I check before applying?
Passport validity, photo requirements, trip purpose, and entry timing all matter before you submit.
Who should use this route?
Most Canadian passport holders travelling to India for tourism, visiting friends or family, or another permitted short visit should first check the official India eVisa eligibility list. Indian citizens, OCI cardholders, and travellers whose purpose or nationality is outside eVisa rules need a different route.
Is this an eVisa or a sticker/consular application?
The eVisa is online and normally avoids a sticker-visa appointment. Use a regular visa/BLS route for purposes, passports, or stay lengths not covered by eVisa rules; OCI travel is a separate document question.
How much should I budget in Canadian dollars?
The official India fee table sets the amount by nationality, visa type, and season. For a Canadian applicant, budget approximately CAD $165–$190 equivalent for a common tourist eVisa before card or service charges, and verify the portal total immediately before payment.
How long should I allow?
Apply well before the flight. Many complete eVisa files are decided within several working days, but allow at least 4–7 working days and longer during peak travel, holidays, document review, or technical delays.
What documents are usually needed?
Passport with at least six months validity and two blank pages at arrival. Clear passport bio-page scan. Recent colour photograph meeting the Indian portal’s digital specification. Canadian passport and current residence details, plus previous India visa or OCI information if applicable. Travel dates, arrival airport, address in India, and supporting purpose details where the portal asks for them.
Can I apply from BC online?
Apply through the official Indian eVisa portal from BC. The application, upload, payment, and ETA are online; ordinary eVisa applicants do not normally attend BLS for biometrics. Use BLS Vancouver/Surrey or the relevant consular route when the official portal says an eVisa is not appropriate.
How long is the permission valid?
Validity and entries depend on the eVisa category issued. Check the ETA and visa grant carefully for permitted entry airports, validity dates, and the maximum stay before travelling.
