Europe, as usual, has decided that romance must come with paperwork.

Not a lot of paperwork, thankfully. Not “bring three bank statements, your father’s birth certificate, and a notarized blessing from your village elder” paperwork. More like a small online travel authorization before you go.

That little creature is called ETIAS: the European Travel Information and Authorisation System.

For Canadians, this is the main thing to know: ETIAS is not a visa. Canadians are not suddenly being banished from Paris unless they solve a bureaucratic riddle at the airport. ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization for visa-exempt travellers entering 30 European countries for short stays. The official EU travel site says ETIAS is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, while the Government of Canada says the exact start date has not yet been confirmed.

So, yes, if you are planning Europe in 2026, you should know about it. No, you do not need to panic and cancel your Italy honeymoon, Spain family trip, Greece island dreams, or “I’m going to find myself in Portugal” arc.

You just need to understand the new gate before walking into it.

What is ETIAS, actually?

ETIAS is Europe’s way of saying:

“You can still come, but please tell us who you are before you arrive.”

It will apply to travellers from countries that currently do not need a visa for short stays in much of Europe. Canada is one of those countries.

Once ETIAS begins, Canadian passport holders will generally need to apply online before travelling to ETIAS countries for short stays. These stays are still based on the familiar rule: up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

So the old freedom is not gone. It just has a small digital bouncer now.

When does ETIAS start for Canadians?

As of now, ETIAS is scheduled for the last quarter of 2026. That means sometime around October to December 2026, unless Europe delays it again, which, honestly, would not shock anyone. This system has been “coming soon” for so long it basically has its own Netflix teaser trailer.

The EU says the exact date will be announced at least six months before the system starts.

So if you are travelling to Europe in early or mid-2026, ETIAS may not apply yet. If you are travelling in late 2026 or after, assume it might apply and check before booking or departure.

How much will ETIAS cost?

The official EU site currently lists the ETIAS application fee as €20. Some travellers may be exempt from paying the fee, but they may still need the authorization.

This is not the part of the trip that destroys the budget. Your hotel in Rome will do that lovingly and with confidence.

How long is ETIAS valid?

ETIAS is expected to be valid for up to three years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It is linked to your passport, so if you get a new passport, you will need a new ETIAS.

This part matters because people love forgetting their passport expiry date until the airport agent looks at them with the face of a disappointed school principal.

Before Europe, check:

Your passport expiry
Your ETIAS status, once the system is live
Your first destination
Your 90-days-in-180-days limit
Whether your name matches exactly across documents

Travel is romantic. Border control is not.

Which countries will require ETIAS?

ETIAS will apply to travel to 30 European countries, including major destinations like France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, and others.

This is where travellers can get confused, because Europe is not one simple box. There is the EU, the Schengen Area, countries in Europe but outside Schengen, countries in Schengen but not the EU, and then your uncle saying “just go via London beta, easy,” while forgetting London has its own rules.

So do not assume. Check based on your exact route.

A trip like Vancouver to Paris to Rome to Barcelona? ETIAS will likely matter once active.

A trip involving the UK? Different rules may apply there.

A trip with multiple stops? You need to know your first ETIAS country of entry.

Is ETIAS the same as a Schengen visa?

No.

This is the big one.

ETIAS is not a visa.

It is for short visits such as tourism, business, transit, and family visits. It does not let you move to Europe, work in Europe, study long-term, or start a dramatic new life where you open a tiny café in Tuscany because one sunset emotionally overwhelmed you.

For longer stays, work, study, or immigration purposes, you may still need the proper visa or permit.

Will Canadians still get 90 days in Europe?

Yes, for short stays, Canadians can generally still visit the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. ETIAS does not magically reset that clock.

This is important for people doing long Europe trips.

You cannot do 89 days in France, leave for two days, then come back for another 89 days and say, “New trip, new me.”

The border system will not admire your creativity.

What should Canadian travellers do now?

For now, do not rush to random websites claiming they can “secure your ETIAS today.” The system is not yet active. When it does open, use the official EU ETIAS website, not some sketchy “EuropeFastVisaApprovalNow-dot-whatever” site charging you five times the fee while looking like it was built during a lunch break.

For 2026 Europe travel, the safe approach is simple:

Plan your trip normally, but keep ETIAS in mind if travelling in late 2026 or beyond.

Make sure your passport is valid.

Watch for the official start date.

Apply before departure once the system is live.

Do not leave it to the airport counter, because airport panic has a very special flavour. It tastes like sweat, regret, and overpriced coffee.

What this means for your Europe trip

Honestly? For most Canadians, ETIAS should be a small step, not a giant wall.

The bigger issue is not the €20 fee. The bigger issue is confusion. People will hear “new Europe travel rule” and immediately start behaving like they need an embassy appointment, a binder, and a spiritual cleansing.

You probably do not.

But you do need to be prepared.

Europe in 2026 is still very much open to Canadians. The croissants are still there. The ruins are still there. The trains are still confusing but beautiful. The hotel rooms are still smaller than expected. And yes, someone in your group will still say, “Let’s just walk, it’s only 18 minutes,” before accidentally starting a medieval pilgrimage.

ETIAS just means one more thing to check before you fly.

Not the end of Europe travel.

Just Europe adding a small digital checkpoint before the adventure begins.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do Canadians need ETIAS to travel to Europe in 2026?

Canadians do not need ETIAS yet, but ETIAS is expected to begin in the last quarter of 2026. Once it starts, Canadian passport holders travelling to many European countries for short stays will generally need to apply before departure.

Is ETIAS a visa?

No. ETIAS is not a visa. It is a travel authorization for visa-exempt travellers. Canadians can still visit the Schengen Area visa-free for short stays, but once ETIAS starts, they may need this authorization before entering participating European countries.

How much does ETIAS cost for Canadians?

The ETIAS application fee is currently listed as €20 on the official EU travel site. Some travellers may be exempt from paying the fee, but they may still need the ETIAS authorization.

How long can Canadians stay in Europe with ETIAS?

ETIAS does not change the short-stay rule. Canadians can generally stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Leaving and coming back during the same 180-day window does not reset the clock. Europe is romantic, yes, but the math is still watching.

How long is ETIAS valid?

ETIAS is expected to be valid for up to three years, or until your passport expires, whichever happens first. Since ETIAS is linked to your passport, a new passport means you may need a new ETIAS.

Which European countries will require ETIAS?

ETIAS will apply to travel to 30 European countries, including many popular destinations such as France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Croatia.

Should I apply for ETIAS now?

No. The system is not active yet. The official EU page says there is no action required at this point. When ETIAS becomes available, travellers should apply through the official EU ETIAS website and avoid random third-party websites pretending to be official.

Does ETIAS guarantee entry into Europe?

No. ETIAS gives you permission to travel to the border, but the final entry decision is still made by border officials. Think of it as getting permission to approach the gate, not ownership of the castle.
