Ancient Egypt, one of the world's oldest civilizations, flourished along the Nile River for over 3,000 years. This remarkable civilization left an indelible mark on history, influencing art, architecture, religion, and governance.
Geography and Nile Civilization: Situated in northeastern Africa, Ancient Egypt prosperity was closely tied to the Nile River. The annual flooding of the Nile provided fertile soil, enabling agricultural abundance. The belief in an afterlife led to elaborate burial practices and the construction of tombs filled with treasures for the deceased's journey to the next realm.
Hieroglyphics and Papyrus: The Egyptians developed a sophisticated writing system known as hieroglyphics. Carved or painted on monuments and written on papyrus, this script comprised a mix of logographic and alphabetic elements. The Rosetta Stone, discovered in 1799, played a pivotal role in deciphering hieroglyphics.
Decline and Legacy: Ancient Egypt faced periods of decline, including invasions by foreign powers. The conquest by Alexander the Great and subsequent rule by the Ptolemaic dynasty marked the end of native pharaonic rule. Nevertheless, the legacy of Ancient Egypt endures, influencing global understanding of history, culture, and human achievement. Today you will explore Egypt’s main highlight – the Great Pyramid of Giza. For over 3,800 years Khufu’s Pyramid was considered the tallest man-made structure in the world. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. Early morning after breakfast transfer to Cairo airport to board your flight to Aswan. On arrival in Aswan, we transfer to board the Nile Cruise (Subject to availability of rooms). Visit of Philae Temple dedicated to the Goddess Isis. This sacred site was venerated from the Pharaonic era up to the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods with each ruler adding their own stamp onto the stones. Set sail to Kom Ombo for the unusual double Temple of Kom Ombo constructed during the Ptolemaic Dynasty and dedicated to two gods – Sobek and Horus. Early morning to avoid the noontide heat of the West Bank, we visit the Valley of the Kings with its numerous tombs and chambers. Only fifteen tombs out of 63 are open for the public, among them are those granted to Tutankhamen, Ramesses I and Seti II. You will pass by the village of ancient workers at Deir El Madina, the Temple of Madinet Habu dedicated to Ramesses III and massive twin statues depicting the Pharaoh Amenhotep III was widely known as the Colossi of Memnon. Proceed to the Valley of the Queens to explore the colonnaded Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, where you can learn the tale of the divine birth of the first female king. Today you have the day free for leisure activities. Alternatively, you may choose an optional tour (subject to minimum passengers). Either go on a half-day tour to Saqqara, Dashour, and Memphis to learn more about the history and evolution of pyramid buildings or a full day trip to Alexandria, where you will be taken to see Pompey’s Pillar, Roman triumphal column - which is among the world’s largest monolithic columns, then later head to the rock-carved Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, one of the Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages. Finally, visit the Citadel of Qaitbay, built in the 15th century. Breakfast: Included Dinner: Included
